However, if you're just staritng out I would strongly advise against starting as a Muslim. So yeah, it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥, but everyone knows its ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and it won't happen again. EU4, which was released after CK2, allows players to play any faction without DLC (although certain factions are rather boring and lack flavour). Making Muslims in particular only playable with DLC was a mistake, and one Paradox have subsequently admitted. A DLC more or less now :).īut you don't need all those DLC for the base game, and its the base game I would recommend new players to start with anyway, which is the plain, simple, christian feudal count. i'm confident I'm still playing this in years from now. Once that far in, it becomes like an all-time favorite game. it takes hundreds of hours to fully comprehend this crazy, people-backstabbing, kingdom ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, treacherous, devilchild incest-concubining, child-flaying, empire-building, powerplay chess game, sacrifying your owns sons as pawns. The amount of development this game has had by now is, insane, this game is huge, vast. Its a completely different game as a Pagan, or as a muslim, each requiring seperate game development, nicely integrated into the whole picture, so I do somewhere can follow their line of thought of DLC marketing. So unless you buy at a sale (it does go to -80 regulary, or at their site), you are looking at hundreds of euros.īut, unlike CIV, the gameplay is completely different for each religion. There is also a DLC that adds optional features that are, imho core, such as Way of Life, and now Conclave. and as mentioned, its a DLC for pagans, DLC for the indians, DLC for the mongols, DLC for republics. It's odd to me that I have to pay extra money to play as other factions. The DLC's later unlocked the other styles as well. Either it gets upgraded to a level where it’s worth the price, or just get it on sale.Originally posted by Kraek:Game was released to play a christian feudal lord (fighting crusades). Honestly, with all the limitations of flat terrain only, no elevations, no hub stations, too much micromanagement, it’s still too unpolished. Just wait for a bundle or simply ignore them, unless you really need that little bit of eye (or ear) candy. The various cosmetic DLCs are entirely optional, and add purely superficial stuff like radio stations or dome/building skins. Neither the “official” nor the community patches can guarantee that it works properly. Even if it’s part of a bundle, deactivate it. Just stay away from that piece of crap, its buggy as all hells combined and requires ridiculous micromanagement efforts. Not worth it to buy individually, but if it’s part of a bundle, then why not. The ranches are an unimaginative, purely cosmetic “alternative” to farms, and the pets are just plain annoying. With some buildings being useful, but others way too OP, it’s not a necessity as well. The balance varies, the retirement home and school spire are too OP, while the hospital and large oxygen tank are very useful (and should’ve been in the base game). Those DLCs add more buildings and a few skins. Colony Design Set and In-Dome Buildings Packs. You will also have to compete for the milestones with the other colonies now. It adds rival colonies, unique buildings, vehicles, new factions, and a trade function. It’s the only one that’s worth the full price. Otherwise, everything becomes rather boring and repetitive after Sol 100 or so. The terraforming of Mars is a complex, but rewarding process. This is certainly the best expansion that greatly enchances and prolongs the game by providing a long-term goal. Just make sure to deactivate Below&Beyond.ġ. The best decision, however, would be to wait for a package sale or a HumbleBundle that includes it all.

If you still have some money to spare, get the Colony Design Set and In-Dome Buildings Packs, too. This will double a single playthrough’s length, and also provide more (much-needed) replayability. If you’re really strapped for cash, then I’d say wait for a sale, and maybe get the Space Race DLC as well if it’s 50% off or less. Long story short, the Green Planet expansion should be the bare minimum which to buy, and it’s the only DLC actually worth its full price. Surviving Mars is not quite as bad in this regard (at least compared with CK2 or Stellaris), but it still needs some of the expansions for a proper experience. You see, it’s Paradox’ policy to release a “teaser” of a game, then milk the players with countless DLCs. You may squeeze out a few more playthroughs by raising the difficulty level, but sooner, rather than later, you’ll get sick and tired of yet another dust storm.

It is nice, of course, but has low replayability. The base game itself is quite lackluster, unfortunately. Which DLCs to buy? Since this question appears quite often, I decided to provide a quick overview.
